How Rinar Works

Figure 1.

The symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis are triggered by activation of sensory receptors on nerve fibres in the nose. An initial reflex reaction results in the immediate release of chemical signals which increase inflammation and mucus secretion in the nose (1). A second signal is sent to inflammatory cells in the nose which also increase inflammation (2). A third signal is sent to the brain which sends a signal back to the nose resulting in swelling of blood vessels and increased production of mucus (3). RINAR works by desensitising the nerve fibres in the nose which decreases the transmission of these three signals and therefore could reduce the symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis. Adapted from van Rijswijk et al. 20052 and data on file.4

Non-allergic rhinitis is triggered by things which irritate the nerve fibres in the nose. RINAR works by desensitising these nerve fibres. It contains a very low dose of capsaicin, the natural active component of the pungent taste found in capsicum. Repeated low strength capsaicin applications results in desensitisation of the nerve fibres in the nose.2,3-9

Because RINAR works by reducing the sensitivity of the nerves fibres in the nose, it can provide symptom relief that last beyond the 3-day treatment course.4

During the desensitising process, RINAR may cause some initial discomfort, ranging from stinging/burning sensations to rhinorrhoea (runny nose). This should subside during treatment as the nasal lining becomes less sensitive and non-allergic rhinitis symptoms should also subside2-8.

The capsaicin in RINAR is a low concentration - how it compares with other capsaicin containing items is shown in the capsaicin concentration chart.
